Avila’s Honey

In the early 1970’s, Mr Julian Avila at age 25 bee keeper of Orange Walk District, started to build hives for the sole purpose of beekeeping & honey production to better off his living conditions. As a young beginner, Mr. Avila sought assistance from the Cooperatives Department for training purposes on how to manage bee hives, expand hives & safety procedures on honey extraction.

Around 1975, Mr Avila had formed a Cooperative called the NORWALK BEE KEEPERS COOPERATIVE, with 200 bee keepers from both Orange Walk & Corozal Districts.
This newly formed cooperative started to provide the avenue for better livelihood for many families from the North of Belize. Since the early 1980’s, NORWALK BEEKEEPERS COOPERATIVE was exporting about 400 tons of honey to Europe, UK, Holland & Dutch markets annually. Bee hives are closely monitored and honey is extracted every 3 months to be bottled for sale in local stores. Avila’s Pure Honey can be found in stores at Corozal Town, Belize City and in Orange Walk Town.
